Summary:
The position of the Corrections Counselor coordinates and supervises social service, educational religious and other rehabilitative programs for inmates.
Researches, recommends, implements and evaluates inmate programs.
Renders crisis intervention services and counseling to inmates.
Recommends, orients, and trains volunteers from the community for various inmate programs and performs background checks.
Ensures compliance of both inmates and volunteers with departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations concerning inmate programs.
Establishes and maintains program schedules and participates in training programs/sessions as required.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities:
Counsels offenders, individually or in groups, in identifying the problems of their behavior, in recognizing their interests and potentials for being constructive citizens, in resolving personal problems and in understanding the requirements and purposes of institutional life Screens inmate requests, and performs needs assessments in order to assign inmates to the appropriate programs Plans and coordinates and manages rehabilitation, substance abuse, religious, and other life skills programs for offenders, drawing upon jail, local community and other resources Maintains a monthly program schedule, and volunteer roster, and provides these to the security staff of the jail Maintains reports and prepares monthly and annual statistical reports Ensures that all inmates receive equal access to quality counseling services from professionals, clinicians, and responsible volunteers throughout the community Participates on community based committees for substance abuse and religious programs Maintains background investigation and agreement records on volunteers, other records, and provides orientation training to each volunteer Assists offenders in arranging personal contacts, reclassification, outside correspondence, job placement, re-release preparation, and assistance with forms, notary services, and other tasks as may be needed Meets with teachers, employers, correctional officers, court officials, and other jail staff to review the performance of inmates Required Knowledge Skills/Abilities:

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and
Experience:
Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
Three (3) months full time, wage-earning offender discipline experience; or two (2) years full-time, wage-earning criminal justice experience.
Thirty (30) semester hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE) may be substituted for each year of experience on a year-for-year basis.
